Healing is understanding

True healing comes from inside. Dr. Lisa Shaver understands this through a unique integration of naturopathic and Chinese medicines, and she intends to open new doors to her patients. Dr. Shaver shares one story of such healing.

The Interview

I’m Dr. Lisa Shaver. I’m a naturopathic physician and acupuncturist. As a naturopath we treat physical symptoms but part of healing is also understanding who we are, and that might go into the counseling side. I had this one patient who had a back surgery scheduled, and from Portland he was going to fly to Florida for three months and have one surgery, lie in bed for a month, have another surgery, lie in bed for a month, have another surgery, lie in bed for a month, and then he could fly home, and he said, “Well, I might as well try you. Last resort. I don’t know if you can do anything for me.” What I loved about treating him is, one, he could get back into nature and go hiking with his buddies but, two, both of his children were into eating cleanly and they were able to connect with Dad on that point.

Now, he has this whole new area where he and his daughters cook together and bond together and read health articles together about food, and he has this deeper relationship with his children just because I offered him healing that had to do with food.  That’s exciting to me to see that that person is better not only because they feel better but their life is enriched because of a world that I opened to him.
